Analysts predict the cheapening of SSD-drives
According to the online publication DigiTimes, referring to industry sources, the price of used in solid state drives NAND flash memory in 2019 may decrease by 50% compared to its current value. Earlier it was reported that next year the price of SSD may fall to $ 0.08 per 1 GB.
As noted by DigiTimes, the continuing decline in prices is likely to be due to the expansion of SSD suppliers ' production capacity in order to increase profitability. Another important reason for the sharp reduction in the cost of storing gigabytes of information on solid state drives is the use of 96-layer 3D NAND memory.
The mass release of the 96-layer NAND flash is expected to be rolled out in the first half of 2019. Most manufacturers have enough resources to produce 50000-100000 chips of this type per month, and the Chinese Yangtze Memory Technology has declared its readiness to ship 150 000 chips of 96-layer 3D NAND.
In total, there are 6-7 large NAND manufacturers in the world ready to use new production processes, the DigiTimes report says. Some of them (Samsung, Toshiba Memory / Western Digital, Mircon / Intel and SK Hynix) have already introduced technologies for mass production of 96-layer flash memory.
But the DRAM memory chips next year are likely to remain at the current level, according to the report DigiTimes. Their largest suppliers — Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — do not plan to significantly increase production despite the expected growth in demand from manufacturers of data centers, gaming devices, IOT devices and automotive systems.
