Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx processor caught up with Intel Core i5 performance
As it became known, Qualcomm and Lenovo have prepared a laptop for Computex 2019, which they call the first 5G PC or Project Limitless, a system built on the Quad-core 7-nm Snapdragon 8cx processor (Snapdragon 8 Compute eXtreme), specially designed for Windows laptops, presented in December last year. Moreover, the companies even shared the first performance tests of their system, and it is not surprising why they did it. According to benchmarks, the Snapdragon 8cx processor manages to outperform the Quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with Kaby Lake-R design.
Although the name Project Limitless implies that we are not talking about a serial product, cooperation between Qualcomm and Lenovo suggests that the whole project will eventually result in a mass product that Lenovo plans to release in early 2020.
We will remind, 64-bit ARMv8-a processor Snapdragon 8cx guided by Qualcomm specifically for laptops. The goal set by the developers is to achieve performance at the level of Intel Core i5 U-series processors. At the moment, Snapdragon 8cx samples are still working at low frequencies, but they are already close enough to the targets. So, in the demonstrated version of the Project Limitless processor worked at a frequency of 2.75 GHz while the final version of the chip will have to reach a frequency of 2.84 GHz.
The Qualcomm processors that existed until now could not reach the performance provided by Intel's energy-efficient solutions for thin and light laptops. However, the new Snapdragon 8cx chip is a significant step forward. According to representatives of the company, the core of Kryo 495, underlying Snapdragon 8cx, about 2.5 times more powerful versions of Kryo chip Snapdragon 850, which is able to deliver Snapdragon 8cx about one level with Intel Core i7-8550U. Applied in the same Snapdragon 8cx graphics core Adreno should be about twice as fast graphics Snapdragon 850 and three times faster graphics Snapdragon 835.
Now, however, about the performance of Snapdragon 8cx possible to speak more definitely: today Qualcomm introduced the test results of the CPU tests from PCMark 10. For comparison tests were used in office applications, graphics, test and test autonomy, which measures the operating time from the battery. Snapdragon 8cx was compared with Core i5-8250U — a Quad-core and eight-threaded 15-watt Kaby Lake-R 2017 processor operating at a frequency of 1.6 to 3.4 GHz.
