Sales of 4G and 5G-enabled computers soared amid the pandemic
|A study conducted by Strategy Analytics suggests that last year, the global market experienced an explosive growth in demand for portable computers equipped with a modem for accessing the Internet via cellular networks. |
In particular, during 2020, 10.1 million laptops with 3G, 4G/LTE and 5G modules were sold globally. This is 70 % more than the result for the previous year. The reason is the pandemic, which has created the need for additional devices with a network connection.
Almost half of the total sales were in North America. Europe and the Asia-Pacific region together accounted for approximately 45 % of the industry.
By the end of 2020, about 26 million portable computers with the ability to exchange data via cellular networks were in operation worldwide. This is a quarter (25 more than in 2019.
Last year, 97 % of all laptops sold with a cellular modem supported 4G/LTE connectivity. However, in the coming years, the situation will begin to change, and in 2025, 69 % of portable PCs with the function of connecting to cellular networks will receive a 5G modem. By that time, the global market volume will reach approximately 14.3 million units.
